About the Scholarship – A Legacy of Love and Learning
Created as a tribute by Dr. Prem Chowdhry to her parents, Mrs. Vidya Vati and Mr. Hardwari Lal, this scholarship embodies the values of compassion, equality, and lifelong learning.
Mrs. Vidya Vati
A woman of quiet strength, intellect, and unwavering values, Mrs. Vidya Vati pursued and completed her education at a time when educating girls was rare. The daughter of a school teacher in Haryana, she went on to establish Krishna Modern School in Delhi in memory of her late son, running it for several years until her passing.
Mr. Hardwari Lal
A man of integrity, humility, and principle, Mr. Hardwari Lal, though reserved, strongly supported his daughter’s education. This was a progressive and courageous stance in an era when girls were often denied basic education and rights.
Dr. Prem Chowdhry
A historian, feminist, and fearless thinker, Dr. Prem Chowdhry, taught English at Miranda House, has dedicated her life to uplifting rural girls through education and dignity. Her research and activism—particularly on gender justice in rural North India—have established her as a bold and respected voice. This scholarship is a living tribute to the ideals instilled in her by her parents.
At Miranda House, University of Delhi
Dr. Prem Chowdhry served as a Professor at Miranda House in English Department. In February 2024, she introduced the Vidya and Hardwari Lal Scholarship to support first-year undergraduate students.
- Once awarded in the first year, the scholarship continues for the next two years.
- The financial award varies by academic year and course.
- Currently, 78 students are benefiting from the program.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a first-year undergraduate student at Miranda House.
- Annual family income must be ₹3,00,000 or less.
- Strong academic performance is required.
- For continuation, students must achieve a CGPA of 7 or above and must maintain over 70% attendance each semester.
